The RENAULT 5 E-Tech 90kW Evolution Urban Range 40kWh 5dr Auto is the entry-level trim of the all-electric Renault 5, which was voted 2025's Car of the Year. It features a smaller battery for city driving and comes with a retro-futuristic design, advanced tech, and a competitive price.
Performance and range
This model offers solid performance for urban and general commuting, but its range is smaller than the higher-spec models.
Power: It is equipped with a 90kW (120hp) motor, which provides a 0–62 mph time of approximately 9 seconds.
Range: The 40kWh battery provides a WLTP range of around 190–192 miles.
Charging: It can rapid-charge at up to 80kW DC, taking about 30 minutes to go from 15% to 80% charge. Home AC charging at 11kW would take around 11 hours for a full charge.
Handling: Its nimble handling and tight turning circle make it particularly well-suited for city driving.
Interior features and technology
The Evolution trim comes well-equipped for an entry-level model, featuring a dual-screen cockpit.
Infotainment: A 10.1-inch central touchscreen with the OpenR Link system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
Driver display: A smaller 7-inch digital driver information display sits behind the steering wheel.
Materials: The cabin features fabric upholstery and design elements that pay homage to the original Renault 5, including a cushioned two-tiered dashboard.
Comfort: Keyless entry, automatic climate control, and a heat pump are all standard.
Design and practicality
The Renault 5 E-Tech blends retro charm with modern touches and offers reasonable space for its class.
Exterior: Features 18-inch alloy wheels, square LED daytime running lights, and a body-coloured roof with a black roofline. Unlike higher trims, it does not include the bonnet charge indicator.
Colours: Standard paint options include Pop Yellow and Arctic White, with other colours available for an extra cost.
Boot space: The 326-litre boot is generous for a car of its size and includes underfloor storage for charging cables.
Seating: There is reasonable space in the front, though taller adults might find rear legroom a bit tight.
Safety and driver aids
The Evolution trim includes numerous standard safety features, though some advanced systems are reserved for higher trims.
Safety rating: It received a four-star rating from Euro NCAP in 2024.
Standard equipment: This model features a suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including automatic emergency braking with urban and pedestrian/cyclist detection, emergency lane-keeping assist, and rear parking sensors.
My Safety Switch: A feature that allows for personalised configuration of key ADAS features via a button.
